Yesterday

Yesterday
by John Lennon and Paul McCartney

Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away.
Now it looks as though they’re here to stay.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Suddenly, I’m not half the man I used to be.
There’s a shadow hanging over me.
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.

Why she had to go?
I don’t know, she wouldn’t say.
I said something wrong.
Now I long for yesterday.

Yesterday love was such an easy game to play.
Now I need a place to hide away.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Why she had to go?
I don’t know, she wouldn’t say.
I said something wrong.
Now I long for yesterday.

Yesterday love was such an easy game to play.
Now I need a place to hide away.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

About the authors

I admit to never having been a big fan of The Beatles, although I always like this song, I think of it more as a poem. Many songs are poetic in nature, but this one especially so. It was released by The Beatles in August 1965.  You certainly don’t need me to tell you anything about The Beatles!

According to a few sources that I found, Paul McCartney wrote it in a dream but thought he stole it subconsciously. He is said to have woken up and rushed to a piano and played the music to make sure he didn’t forget it.  He said: “For about a month I went round to people in the music business and asked them whether they had ever heard it before.”  Of course, no one had.

  1. The Beatles were before my time. However as I grew older their songs became more meaningful to me. This song reminds me of beloved sister, gone too soon from this earth. Thank you for sharing. Peace,Love & Light
